Wideband Pulse Wave: Prelude
An introduction to music as harm reduction in a time of great unrest
I was going to put a witty journalistic-esque introduction here, talking about the parallels between self-discovery and music listening, but I felt it would've been too masturbatory and fake-sounding (and I have a headache), so I scrapped it.
Actual Context
Mostly out of a sense of numbness and desperation, I've been on RateYourMusic since the time of my massive combination post-breakup depression/rotting phase. I find music to be cathartic and interesting, despite having very little merit in the skill myself at the moment.
There are several albums I could list off the top of my head that got me through this dark period in my personal life, and since we're entering a void, with unfathomable amounts of fighting and survival ahead, I have elected to begin posting some thoughts on music I come across in long form, with one-liners as compliment. I cannot guarantee they'll be any good nor consistent, but eh.
Criteria
I am not a professional reviewer with a musical background, but I know what I like in a record and what I'd be trying to find in a sonic project of my own. Ultimately, I would describe my music taste as 'heavily opinionated' much like any other reviewer, and I find 'objectivity' in music review to be subjectivity in concentrate. I will simply review whatever comes my way
Genre Spread
I don't like to limit myself to genres too hard, but I like and generally prefer electronic music (DnB, breaks, etc) so that'll probably be what's covered here for the most part. Fusions are amazing and I don't much care for genre purity.
Rating and 'is it good'
If it's below a 5, it's not my cup of gasoline. That's it. End of Discussion. If it's a 1-2, I consider it to be not worth my time, really. Here's a table of the rating system without my RYM descriptions, in an informative manner:
[1: Fuck off] [2: No] [3: Ehhhh no] [4: eh?]
[5: Meh] [6: Ok]
[7: Nice] [8: Great] [9: Fantastic] [10: Flawless]
Opinion Mechanism and Critique
My opinions are my own, and I don't expect anyone to share them or even treat them as any form of gospel. I implore people to formulate their own opinions on the music reviewed here before typing at me about how wrong it is.
Where to start
I'm actually not too certain with where to begin. I can't fathom keeping up with new releases all the time so you'll forgive me if I continuously review albums that are aeons old. I am still getting exposed to new content all the time. Ultimately, I'll probably add long forms to the short one-liner reviews I put up on RYM and add insight for why I feel that way about $album.
Overall, I think this will be a fun experience, especially weaving it into travel and work. May it be a neon light in the oncoming darkness.
